Acrylic Paint Product Reviews & Tips for Artists

Winsor & Newton Acrylic Paint for Artists

Winsor & Newton Paint:

Jolly Good Acrylic Paint, I say. This company was founded in 1832, but of course they didn’t make acrylic paint back then. Today Winsor & Newton acrylic paint can be found in stores all over America.

Their brand is carried in art supply and hobby/craft stores everywhere. I would say that it is the most readily available acrylic paint in the United States.

The company has a burning hot website in which you can learn a lot about artists paint.

Back in the day, around 1841, Queen Victoria gave them a Royal Warranty, giving the the priviledge of using the tagline “The World’s Finest Artists’ Materials”. Every suceeding royal has continued this designations.

As an America, I get a kick out of this sort of thing. If the Queen says use Winsor & Newton, then does everyone have to use it? Hee-hee Traditions are curious things.

Our Winsor & Newton Product Reviews

Galeria Black Lava Acrylic Texture Gel

Winsor & Newton Artists’ Acrylic:

This is by far some of the biggest product roll-out for acrylic paint I have seen. The new acrylic paint is advertising everywhere! These tubes promise the following:

same color when wet or dry

longer open time

unrivelled color brillance

17 brand new pigments

With all this hype, you can’t help but want to try this stuff. Winsor & Newton Artist’ Acrylic includes a small assortmant of mediums, primers, and topcoats.

The selection of mediums is less robust for the Artist’s Acrylic line than it is for Galeria Paints, but you can find most of the basics needed for traditional fine art painting techniques.

Galeria Acrylic Color:

Galeria is the less expensive Winsor & Newton student grade acrylic paint. Less pigments and more fillers equals less punch. But if you are just “messing around” with some paint and canvas, then student grade color might meet your needs.

Galeria Pigment is available in both fluid acrylic bottles and thicker bodied tube paint.

A full suite of mediums, texture gels, and topcoats are produced to accompany the Galeria line.

Note about Winsor & Newton Acrylic:

The company offers a product somewhat unique to acrylic painting: a CLEAR gesso. I haven’t seen this in most acrylic paint lines. This clear gesso is specifically intended to be mixed with pigments to produce your own colored gesso. Being clear, you don’t have to deal with color tinting and you shuld be able to produce a more intense colored gesso at home.

Ever tried to make a dark blue gesso with ultramarine and white gesso? It also becomes a tint. (lighter blue)

How to buy:

You can purchase Winsor & Newton at most any art store in America. Although if you don’t live near a Premier Winsor & Newton Art Retailer, you may find a better selection of products on line.

Winsor & Newton’s main website is chock full of information of acrylic painters.  Apparently  hey go so excited about the new Artists’ Arcylic  they built a special Winsor & Newton Acrylic Website just for this new product line.  Take it for a spin, it’s a fun little ride.

  1. Bethany says:

Hey there! I switched to this brand from Golden just because of the color shift and found them to be very brilliant and a nice buttery feel.

And I believe Liquitex also sells a clear gesso?

    Great site!

  2. Thanks for the tip about the clear gesso, Cindy. I’ve used the top line of Winsor & Newton for years and love it for the way I paint, which is with very little medium or water. Once you’ve become hooked on it’s texture and color density, everything else seems too “light”. Also, I like the true transparency of their transparent colors.
