Ok, so Matisse Acrylic paint is made in Australia. Check out their video commercial below. By far more exciting than a typical company’s promo video. Kangaroos too!
What we call Matisse here in the States, is actually made by a Aussie company officially named Derivan. Until recently, company was name Matisse-Derivan. Then they dropped the Matisse name and call themselves Derivan. But their flagship product is still called Matisse. Got it? Huh? I’m confused too !
MATISSE Acrylic News:
All this legal mumbo-jumbo name game stuff is really insignificant to painters, just remember the name Matisse Acrylic and you will be fine.
Derivan produces other types of paint besides artist’s paint. Most of it looks like glittery, non-toxic thin goop for schoolchildren, face-painting, and crafting. Not the sort of paint we are interested in here at Acrylic Paint Review at the moment. Although I am sure it is perfectly good stuff. It is simply produced for a different purpose.
In looking over their website, I don’t see any oil or watercolor in their artist-grade line up. Looks like these guys are acrylic all the way.
The Matisse Acrylic if offered in two viscosities.
- Structure is thick, has an impasto feel.
- FLOW is the name for their fluid line of acrylic paint.
Both are sold in the unique square jars and traditional tubes.
The Jerry’s Artarama mentions that FLOW is perfect for murals and folkart. Hold on now! Is one to think it is not artist grade paint after all but perhaps craft or student grade?
Don’t be misled. Ounce per ounce both STRUCTURE and FLOW pack the same amount of powerful pigment punch. Mr. DiGiulio was kind enough to help clarify this for me. He told me:
“ A note about Matisse Structure and Flow. The flow is able to have more coverage than the Structure per tube, therefore it is the better choice for mural painting. Strickly economics.“
Company Background:
Derivan company was founded in Sidney Australia in 1964. They are pretty much global now. They also offer the standard mix of mediums to accompany Matisse STRUCTURE and FLOW.

Interesting sidebar reading: I found a cool website about an globe trotting artist who used Matisse on Antarctica as their resident artist earlier this year. Cool Stuff. His name is Stephen Eastaugh.
