Acrylic Paint Product Reviews & Tips for Artists

Golden Artists Colors Inc

Sam Golden was one of the first to make acrylic paint in the USA.  He pioneered the development of acrylic in a shop located in Manhatten with co-owner and uncle, Leonard Bocour.  In 1980, Sam Golden came out of retirement to start what is now Golden Artists Colors, Inc.  Commonly considered some of the finest acrylic paint in the world, Golden is a leader of innovative acrylic products.

A another really cool thing about Golden is that the company is employee owned.  Based in New Berlin, New York, Golden products are created on the same property as the barn in which Sam Golden started cooking it up back in 1980. All the Golden Paint you see, in almost every art store in America, is produced in New York State by only 147 people.  (number of employees from the Golden Website).

Eco Friendly Artist Acrylic Paint

Golden also touts that all the paint is manufactured by 100% renewal energy such as wind and certified low impact hydro-electric power.  Golden also has a reverse osmosis program that allows them to re-use 2/3′s of their cleaning water used to manufacture their paint every day.  Golden provides more technical jargon than any artist should ever be allowed to read on the webpage about re-claming waste water.

If you have any eco-guilt about the impact your studio painting activities have on the enviroment, tune into Golden’s articles about:

Removing Water-Based Solid from Rinse Water otherwise known to regular folks as Don’t Dump your Dirty Paint Water Down the Drain.  Especially if you paint frequently, it can really add up over time.  Think of those cute little turtles that live in the river.  They don’t need to be eating your old paint solids.

Disposing of Paint Wastes What to do with those colors you hate, will never use.  Also what to do with all the painting you hate and will never show anyone.  And, what to do with all the empty paint jars you used to create the glorious painting that you plan to show everyone!

About Golden Artist Colors, Inc.  (from Golden’s press release)

Located in its 100,000-square-foot facility in rural Columbus, N.Y., GOLDEN’s 147 employees are committed to producing materials that encourage exploration of form and concept, while assuring archival integrity.  GOLDEN takes pride in the fact that its Custom Lab is the only facility of its kind, dedicated to designing products to the specifications of individual artists.

Developing paints to meet exacting criteria is the specialty of GOLDEN’s custom operations.  As a natural progression from its initiatives in the fine arts market, GOLDEN established Paintworks, the commercial paint and coatings division of Golden Artist Colors, Inc.  It provides commercial and OEM clients with paint making technology, toll manufacturing and integrated solutions.  GOLDEN Paintworks can design a full solution to a coatings project based on its expertise designing, manufacturing, marketing and selling high performance paints and coatings.

The company also assists customers with complex production, packaging and regulatory issues.  The company is not only committed to its customers, but to its employee owners and local community as well.  On November 20, 2008, the company became a 100% Tobacco Free Campus for staff and visitors. Boy, Cindy, you are one busy person! I’ll FB this site and try to keep up…I’ve had to let my volunteer work with our local arts alliance go as it absolutely ate up my last 6 months and really threw me off my painting schedule. I’ve got my “Artists Way” by the bed and it helps me to say no to all the time gobblers! Artists HAVE TO PAINT! FYI, I’m in love with Winsor& Newton, but I tend to use them more like oils than water media… very little medium at all. Also, they adhere well to the varied surfaces that I sometimes use, like stones, slate, tin, etc. Neither do they ‘lift’ like some others when I brush on a glaze.

DISCLOSURE: I am the creative director for Golden Artist Colors.

Thanks for the write up, it’s nice. I wanted to make sure you were in the loop regarding anything that happens at Golden. So, when I saw your post regarding the five new Heavy Body Colors, I thought you’d want to know that those five new colors are ALSO available in our OPEN Acrylics line along with 35 other colors that had not been previously available in OPEN Acrylics. So, OPEN now has 80 colors — up from the 40 colors we made available to this point.
In addition to the new colors, we’ve added Matte versions of OPEN Gel and Medium to go with the Gloss versions.
I won’t editorialize, that your job. I just wanted you to know they were out there. If you do have questions, comments or just want to be kept in the loop, please call Jodi O’dell at 607-847-6154

  3. I am finishing up work for a show in Atlanta called “Eco-Aesthetic” and I’m using recycled, reclaimed, and non-toxic materials. This article was sent to me by a friend and I’m now in the process of switching entirely to Golden brand acrylics. What a fantastic product!

  4. Cindy says:

    Hi Anthony,

Where is your Atlanta show? I might be able to see it, I swing through there occassionally. I just finished up a solo exhibit at the Defoor Centre in ATL for my own work. Nice “talking” with you,
